VENTURA, Calif. — Every trail, desert road, rock crawling route, and backcountry destination enjoyed by off-road enthusiasts today exists because someone fought to protect it.
Access to public lands isn't guaranteed.
It requires dedicated volunteers, partnerships with land management agencies, responsible recreation, and organizations willing to advocate for the future of off-highway vehicle recreation.
For more than two decades, the San Diego Off-Road Coalition (SDORC) has been one of California's strongest voices working to preserve that future.
This August, the San Diego Off-Road Coalition will join RUGGED RADIOS presents THE DIRT EXPO Ventura, Powered by BIGBLANKS.com, August 29–30, 2026, at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, where visitors will have the opportunity to learn how they can help protect the trails, deserts, and public lands that define the Southern California off-road lifestyle.
Protecting Access Since 2002
Founded in 2002, the San Diego Off-Road Coalition was created to unite off-road enthusiasts, clubs, businesses, and land managers with a common purpose—ensuring that future generations continue to enjoy responsible access to public lands throughout Southern California.
As a nonprofit organization, SDORC works with federal, state, county, and local agencies to promote responsible recreation while advocating for balanced land-use policies that recognize the economic, recreational, and environmental value of off-highway vehicle use.
Through collaboration rather than confrontation, SDORC has become one of California's most respected organizations representing the off-road community.
Their work extends across deserts, forests, mountains, and recreation areas throughout San Diego County and beyond, helping ensure that access remains available for families, outdoor enthusiasts, and future generations.
More Than Advocacy
Visitors to the SDORC booth will discover that the organization provides much more than legislative representation.
Programs and initiatives include:
- Public land advocacy
- Trail stewardship
- Volunteer cleanup events
- Trail restoration projects
- Land-use education
- Family recreation programs
- Tread Lightly! education
- Responsible OHV training
- Government agency partnerships
- Community outreach
- Membership opportunities
- Youth education
- Event support
- Conservation initiatives
SDORC also serves as a valuable resource for off-road enthusiasts seeking updates on land closures, public meetings, proposed regulations, volunteer opportunities, and responsible recreation practices throughout California.
Why Advocacy Matters
Every off-road enthusiast benefits from organizations working behind the scenes.
Without advocacy groups like SDORC, trail closures often happen without public input.
Volunteer maintenance projects may never take place.
Responsible recreation education becomes more difficult to deliver.
And the voices of millions of off-road enthusiasts become far less effective when communicating with government agencies.
The San Diego Off-Road Coalition helps ensure that the off-road community has a seat at the table whenever important land-use decisions are being made.
Their volunteers contribute thousands of hours each year restoring trails, cleaning recreation areas, educating new users, and working alongside land managers to demonstrate that responsible recreation and conservation can work together.
Building the Next Generation of Responsible Recreation
One of SDORC's greatest strengths is its commitment to education.
The organization believes that protecting access begins by teaching people how to recreate responsibly.
That includes staying on designated trails, respecting wildlife habitats, packing out trash, minimizing environmental impacts, and encouraging positive interactions with other outdoor users.
These educational efforts help preserve the reputation of the entire off-road community while protecting access for years to come.
As Southern California continues to grow, organizations like SDORC become increasingly important in balancing recreation with conservation.
